I think the story was even better if he didn’t helped the little girl in the end. The spoiled kid is getting what she want, people are never satisfied.

Very insightful. I could have used that guy and his magic a few times in my life.

This is inspireing peice of work ,the chain reaction of events and variations show you the “what if factor “we all think about well done .nice colour change as the sceans roll from the start sin city style.

  11. Matt Says:

wow… that was actually pretty good…. i’ve learned something… never jugde a clip by its comments…

  12. Aaron Says:

What matt has said is so true.

There will always be stupid people out there criticizing everything they see.

For example, maybe a masterpiece work of art is shown on the internet. Comments will range from “Wow it’s beautiful!” to “OMG NO LIFE GET A GIRLFRIEND!”.

This is a great movie and it deserves every award.

  13. Sean Says:

I agree that it might have made for a more intriguing bit if the little girl had had to suffer the broken doll.

In fact, since no one else seems to take notice of him, when she looks over and meets his gaze; it might have been an interesting choice to have the car (which, I notice, eventually stops appearing) run her down.

  14. Mary Jane Says:

    Slightly overrated

  15. Jay Says:

That was great - but I was expecting him to go fix the doll himself at the end!

  16. Abhy Says:

    It is worth watching…

the fact that people are complaining about the ending just proves its point, people are NEVER satisfied.

  21. KeaponLaffin Says:

Actually I think the fixing the doll thing makes the ultimate point.
He’s a good actor and throughout the whole movie he portrays very well ‘Dammit, I gotta fix that,SOB’
I think it displays the Reluctant Hero very well. Dude has the power, but the responsibility sucks.

  22. Jack Johnson Says:

This i pretty cool but certainly overrated. Not “OMG Bestest vid evArrr!!!” But yes entertaining and well made. Maybe not award worthy.

  23. Ian Says:

    well i liked it :)

  24. Travis Says:

Matt… grow up. Seriously. The Butterfly Effect is a term that has been around much MUCH longer then that (average, not crap) film.

And the fact that you won’t watch this simply because someone refrenced a concept that a totally unrelated movie happened to also touch on proves you are quite immature.

  25. ANDY CLEMENTS Says:

it shows you what a hard job God has got

  26. Marius Says:

I find the notion that playing God makes you screw things more much more plausible, therefore enjoyed first half of the movie and was disappointed with the ending….

  27. TomG Says:

It wasn’t really anything special….and abit christian

  28. Emmet Says:

Very cool short. Kind of makes me think about that special effects guy from “On The Lot”, although much simpler in terms of the effects.

  29. elCrasto Says:

    I love it!!!
What a great parable about the interaction between DJ and crowd (there always, ALWAYS being someone who’s not satisfied with the DJ’s performance, as the comments demonstrate).
    Wonder why nobody else realized…
Fuck the comments about the girl “better fix the doll herself” and such. It’s great!!! It’s wonderful!!

  30. Psyfive Says:

I think it was sometime in 2000 or 2001 when I saw a flash animation that is very similar to this video.

I tried to find a link to the swf but the company that made it seems to no longer acknowledge it’s creation.

But that’s not important right now…

The flash animation was called groove monkey. It was about this alien monkey who came to this busy city and was overwhelmed by the noise and people not getting along then out of nowhere a kid who was playing with a ball on the sidewalk looses control of his toy which he follows into the street and is subsequently hit by an oncoming car. Groove monkey, who is an alien DJ rewinds a record which rewinds time and he is able to save the boy. He then manipulates the sounds that the people on the street are making causing everybody to get along and dance in the street.

It was a very good flash animation which is very similar to this video.

Now it’s going to drive me mad until I find the flash.

    The video was good though.

    oh yeah, Denver! woot!

  34. brett Says:

some of the god comments are silly. a god has nothing to do with what happens in our daily lives. There is no omnipotent being peering down on us making decisions that play out within our lives. only people that have not learned to think for themselves believes that our fate is being willed by a higher power. if people put the same energy into solving world hunger or global peace as they do being lemmings for churches who only want their money, we would have a beautiful, harmonious world around us. put your faith in your own actions. all that being said, I still liked it. the entire time i wanted to see how things would play out so i finished it and i think that makes it a good short film. peace.

  44. Jerry Says:

I liked it . A modern day shamen with an electronic box. Well thought out. The esoteric replay. I see more interest in this type of genre. Changing one small part or even minor incident in the past has a phenomenol effect on any future event. Don’t we all look for some blessing to change a drastic event. We live in an electro magnetic world. Mind an material. The only impossible is the closed mind.

  48. Nat Says:

I’d like to know what people mean when they say this was “a bit Christian” or “boring. and it sucked”. A bit Christian…how, exactly? I think this is more about you being afraid of talking about destiny or predestination, because there’s no referencing of God or gods here that I can see. That inference is there for you to make, you made it - so maybe you’re the one protesting too much rather than this trying to give you any dogma to swallow. And if you’re going to say nothing more than something’s “boring. and it sucked” then, well, you’re just a little bit tragic. You can’t even be bothered to thumb the SHIFT key long enough to start a sentence; you can’t formulate an opinion; therefore, why bother saying anything?

I think this is a stunning short film. It raises ideas of interconnectedness and how our actions ripple across the lives of others. It allows us to see godlike action and the consequences of having that sort of power - without the witless gurning of a film like Bruce Almighty or the mindboggling awfulness of The Butterfly Effect - and does it in under 9 minutes. I do think the last little bit with the DJ’s consciousness looking into the life stories of the protagonists is a bit cheesy - but that’s just because the rest of the film takes place in the present so much (despite mucking about with that present) that the ‘life story’ bit looks a bit silly. And the ending would be better, as mentioned above, if the cosmic DJ did nothing to the doll, or if the girl fixed it herself. Not sure what one of the comments above about the girl, saying that she’s spoilt, is about - as far as I can tell a lot of energy is gone into making the child perfectly normal, if a little focused on her doll (aren’t most small girls focused on such things?). She and the DJ share a very well directed moment, staring at each other, and her expression isn’t spoilt or unpleasant at all.

Overall, it’s a fantastic short. Ignore the moron statements above obviously motivated by either (a) not having actually watched it, (b) the desperate need to do down anything someone else has done, since they haven’t ever done anything with their lives and are feeling the burn of failure, or (c) simply having a very small, very closed mind. It’s nice to see films play about with time and be ironically infused without ending on a down note or being essentially a bad, overlong joke. Fabulous.

  53. dr. goldstein Says:

this has been done many, many times, countless variations. not at all original. youngsters think its great beacause, a- there’s a dj involved, and b- they have been made stupid by television and absent parents. oh yea, and none of you can spell…

  54. Nat Says:

Yes, that’s right Dr G, none of us can spell. That’s why you appear to have an issue with the commonly accepted “yeah”. Got a problem with the subvocalised H? You poor thing. Also, you seem to have distinct trouble with the word because, as well as the traditional lack of ability in starting a sentence with a capital letter.

And yes, of course it’s been done before. I would like you to attempt to find a truly original, never-been-done-before-in-any-form piece of narrative fiction published or produced in the last 20 years. Then you can get on your little soapbox. There are only so many ideas in the world. This is just a very nice way of approaching one of them.

And ‘absent parents’? Wow. You are truly stupid.

  55. Doug Glass Says:

Those of you who so loosely pass the term “Butterfly Effect” around need to do some research. The movie was horrid; the term/title is lifted from a 1952 short story, “A Sound of Thunder” by Ray Bradbury. It’s about a dinosaur hunting trip into the past (read it first; condemn hunting second) where one of the hunters steps off the elevated path and kills a butterfly.

The trail of events following that killed butterfly change the future.

  56. Ben Says:

Absolutely fantastic! I like how it showed that every action has a reaction.

  57. Darth Says:

Ha ha! I love your comments Nat. You truly shot Dr. G down in my opinion!

    I enjoyed the video!

  58. W[oIa]nDerIngMind Says:

I liked the end - it shows the dilemma of the main character to “fix” things.
    The end is open:
We see that he fixes the doll - CUT - we see him running away and don’t know what happened this time when he tried to fix another thing….

All the hate here - guys - get a live :)

    Cheers

  59. Philippe Roy Says:

    That was awesome.

True. The groundhog day theme is totally over done, but this is really an original approach. As Nat was saying you can’t really find anything that “hasn’t been done” but certainly there are a lot of different approaches to the same ideas and problems… or else I might as well just quit my job as a photographer! lol!

  60. Rafeek Says:

  61. ManGuy Says:

I enjoyed it, it was good for a short film. There isn’t many movies out there that explore the butterfly effect, other than the one with the namesake, so it was nice to see that concept explored in a modern urban setting.

The ending was awesome. Getting out while the getting was good, before something else could go wrong. Quit while you’re ahead ad all that

  63. Jerry Says:

TOO SHORT! Seems the spirit with this is something within the heart of a neomusician. Visual is becoming the medium to replace music to gain entry into the heart. Think of it as part of the human evolution. What did Chopin and Mozart give us when there was only medium of music and sound. Now we have visual. Artists are trying to speak and move the human soul and spirit today with film. God be with the visual artist. I liked the short film. Not for the sound, just the vision. We still Need SHAKERS and MOVERS.

  66. Reel Man Says:

Um, very interesting. I enjoyed this very much, but I think I would have the Dj get hit by the vehicle in the end. And everyone stop and stare at him. Perhaps too predictable, but I like the darker twists to things….rather then the sweet and innoncent. Or at the end, have one little snap of dialogue.

    overall, excellent, very good concept!

  68. rupert Says:

This film could possibly be THE most brilliant film ever. It deserves a place in history.

    Spread the word!

  69. c2pax Says:

Fantastically well done! Yes, it is an old theme, but it is reconstructed in a new way that is succinct, well written, well directed and well acted. The film, as can be seen from all the comments here, creates philosophical arguments. Considering “Philosophy Major, Anything helps, God Bless” are the only words in the film, maybe all the arguments that are being held by everyone that is responding to the film is exactly what the Director and Writer were looking for from their audience. If you had power, how would you tweak the present?

(I love the idea of the sound equipment as the tools for change and transition. Someone connected with the film had background in the music industry.)

I think the film is wonderfully done. The ending? I guess it all depends upon how each viewer interprets the film and that determines how they feel about the ending. I thought it was a good connection between one of the initiators of the event series (the young girl) and the transformer of events (the DJ). The film became less of a game of change and more one of seeing into the heart of the “DJ of Change”.

I guess one of the final questions that the film makes for the viewers is:
‘Does the DJ represent You or someone or some being else?’

    Hmmm…Philosophy. Positive Change is Good.

  73. Greenchills Says:

The broken doll thingy came across as that he was fixing it because it was just as important to someone as the other stuff. Especially as the little girl probably percieves it to have almost a life of it’s own; so not fixing it would have been as bad to her as someone actually dying, athough she obviously would have got over it faster. Anyway whats wrong with a little compassion? Perhaps though im reading to much into that.

To me, the message is loud and clear - sometimes we do have a second chance to live a better or happier life. That is where God comes into the picture - to make a way where there is no way.
It’s a good illustration to show that God is always in control and He can change what needs to be changed. Moreover it is also part of His plan to allow things to happen because all things happen for good for those who love and trust HIM (Romans 8:28).

God bless the producer of this meaningful clip. It’s inspirational indeed and if we put our thoughts to it, we will get the big picture in life - that God is good and would love to undo all the harms that evil and carelessness have wrought into this world of ours.

    @ Doug Glass

What you say about the Ray Brabury short story is certainly true but surely it was Edward Lorenz, a meteorologist, who made popular the term and the associated Chaos theory. He presented a paper at a conference in 1972 entitled “Does the flap of a butterfly’s wings in Brazil set off a tornado in Texas?”, after discovering that making small changes to his computer model of the earth’s atmosphere would produce wildly varying results; perhaps he was a fan of Bradbury?

  100. Dr. Goldstein Says:

Like all “art”, if most people think it is great, it is probably mediocrity sprinkled with a bit of philosophy 101 and served with a heaping side of corporate-massaged pop culture. The concept here is an old one, but in this incarnation it caters to young people who think they are “deep”, people like Nat who go on and on about why it is such a great work of art, and then proceeds to show his intellectual shortcomings by using sophomoric words like “protagonist” and “dogma”. If you are as smart as you want us to think, then you would agree that this film ain’t so great, that, like the subculture it appeals to, it lacks nuance and depth, and a general ignorance of quality. And I’ve got news for most of you- deejaying is not the great new art form that the older generation just does not understand(like jazz before it). It is just another technique for artists to use. In the long run, people will lose their infatuation with the technology, and there will be less and less opportunities for the charismatic x dealer to pass himself off as an artist because it gets him laid.

  106. Arby Says:

It’s alright. Nice little movie. Wouldn’t call it “amazing”, but it teaches some nice concepts to the “kids”. Basically, you can’t control everything, so just relax, take life’s challenges as they come, and be tolerant. Everyone’s happier this way. Life’s a coin toss (symbolized by the DJ’s giving that gentle push on the turn-table).

They really should cover things like philosophy in high school. Would be nice for students to graduate with more than the simple building blocks of knowledge. Critical thinking, analytical skills, and basic understanding of human psyche and philosophy would make for much more enriched kids entering adlthood.

Brilliantly made short film and deserves every award it received. Not only was the storyline great but the quality of the filming was awesome.

Fixing the girls doll up at the end portrays what I believe the directors own perfectionism by not settling with near enough but rather going that bit further to make things perfect.
